WHEN YOUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN CARRYING TOO MUCH
Stress is part of life, but prolonged stress can begin to affect almost every area of functioning.
You may notice changes in your emotions, concentration, sleep, relationships, motivation, physical energy or ability to manage everyday demands.
Sometimes people keep functioning for a long time before realising how much they're carrying.
You may be getting everything done while internally feeling exhausted.
You may be looking after everyone else while struggling yourself.
Or you may reach a point where strategies that previously worked simply aren't enough anymore.
Counselling gives us space to look beyond “How do I keep pushing through?” and ask what our mind and body may actually need.
ANXIETY CAN LOOK DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE
Anxiety isn't always obvious panic or fear.
It can also look like:
-
constantly thinking ahead
-
overanalysing conversations or decisions
-
difficulty switching off
-
feeling responsible for everything
-
perfectionism
-
procrastination or avoidance
-
needing certainty or reassurance
-
irritability
-
physical tension
-
difficulty sleeping
-
feeling restless or on edge
-
becoming overwhelmed by decisions
-
withdrawing from situations
-
worrying about what other people think
-
feeling as though something might go wrong even when everything appears okay
Counselling can help you understand your anxiety rather than simply fighting against it.
Together, we can explore what triggers it, what maintains it, how it affects your life and what strategies may help you respond differently.
TRAUMA ISN'T ONLY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED
Difficult experiences can continue to influence us long after the situation itself has passed.
Sometimes the effects are obvious. Other times they appear through patterns that don't immediately seem connected to the past.
You might notice difficulty trusting people, strong reactions to particular situations, avoidance, hypervigilance, shutting down, people-pleasing, difficulty with boundaries, feeling unsafe during conflict or patterns in relationships that are difficult to understand.
Trauma-informed counselling doesn't begin with “What's wrong with you?”
It considers “What happened, how did you learn to survive it, and what do you need now?”
You remain in control of what you share and the pace at which we work.
You don't need to tell your entire story in order for counselling to begin.
BURNOUT IS MORE THAN BEING TIRED
Resting for a weekend doesn't always fix burnout.
Burnout can develop when the demands being placed on you repeatedly exceed the resources and capacity available to meet them.
You may experience:
-
persistent exhaustion
-
reduced motivation
-
difficulty concentrating
-
irritability or emotional overwhelm
-
withdrawing from people
-
reduced capacity for everyday tasks
-
feeling disconnected from things you previously enjoyed
-
difficulty making decisions
-
increased sensitivity to demands
-
feeling like you're constantly behind
-
functioning because you have to, rather than because you have capacity
-
needing increasing amounts of recovery time
Counselling can help identify what's contributing to burnout and explore what needs to change — not simply how to become productive again.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM
Sometimes your reaction makes more sense when you understand what your system believes is happening.
Our bodies and brains continually respond to stress, safety, threat and demand.
You may recognise experiences of fight, flight, freeze, shutdown or appeasing others in the ways you respond when overwhelmed.
Understanding these patterns can help reduce the sense that your reactions are random or inexplicable.
Together, we can work on recognising your patterns earlier, understanding triggers, identifying what supports regulation and developing strategies that work for you.
The goal isn't to remain regulated every moment of every day.
It's to develop greater awareness, flexibility and more options for responding when things become difficult.
WHAT WE MIGHT WORK ON TOGETHER
ANXIETY & WORRY
Understanding anxious patterns, triggers and the thoughts, behaviours and experiences that may be maintaining them.
STRESS & OVERWHELM
Identifying demands, capacity and practical ways of reducing or responding to overload.
TRAUMA & DIFFICULT EXPERIENCES
Exploring the ongoing impact of past experiences within a trauma-informed and collaborative counselling relationship.
EMOTIONAL REGULATION
Recognising emotions, triggers and body signals while developing strategies that support regulation.
BURNOUT & CAPACITY
Understanding what has contributed to exhaustion and developing more sustainable expectations, boundaries and rhythms.
BOUNDARIES & PEOPLE-PLEASING
Exploring patterns of over-responsibility, difficulty saying no and prioritising other people's needs at the expense of your own.
SELF-WORTH & INTERNAL BELIEFS
Recognising messages and experiences that have shaped how you understand yourself.
RELATIONSHIPS
Understanding patterns around trust, attachment, communication, conflict and connection.
PRACTICAL TOOLS
Developing strategies that can be used outside counselling rather than leaving insight in the counselling room.
MORE THAN JUST TALKING ABOUT IT
Being heard matters.
Sometimes having somewhere to finally say what you've been carrying is an important part of counselling.
But I also want our sessions to give you something useful to work with.
Depending on your needs, we may use psychoeducation, reflective work, regulation strategies, practical exercises, strengths-based approaches and evidence-informed therapeutic tools.
Sometimes we'll explore where a pattern came from.
Sometimes we'll focus on what you can do when it happens tomorrow.
Often, we'll do both.
Understanding creates context. Practical tools help you do something with that understanding.
A WHOLE-PERSON APPROACH
Anxiety, trauma and burnout don't exist separately from the rest of your life.
Your emotional wellbeing may be influenced by relationships, work, family responsibilities, physical wellbeing, sleep, environment, sensory demands, identity, past experiences, values or significant life changes.
That's why my approach is integrative.
Rather than looking only at symptoms, we can consider the different dimensions of your life and how they may be influencing one another.
We don't need to address everything.
We look at what's relevant to you.
NEURODIVERGENCE & BURNOUT
For neurodivergent people, anxiety, overwhelm and burnout may also be connected with ADHD, autism or AuDHD.
Executive functioning demands, sensory overload, masking, social demands, transitions and continually trying to meet expectations that don't fit the way you function can all contribute to reduced capacity.
Where neurodivergence is part of your experience, counselling can take this into account rather than assuming every difficulty should be understood through a neurotypical framework.
You do not need to be neurodivergent to work with me.
FAITH & SPIRITUALITY
For some people, difficult experiences also affect faith.
You may have questions about God, meaning, suffering, church experiences, identity or beliefs that once felt straightforward.
For clients who want it, Christian faith and spirituality can be thoughtfully integrated into counselling.
For others, faith doesn't need to be part of our work at all.
FAITH INTEGRATION IS ALWAYS OPTIONAL AND GUIDED BY YOU.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE AT BREAKING POINT
Counselling isn't only for crisis.
You may recognise that something isn't sustainable, want to understand patterns before they become more entrenched, or simply want support navigating a difficult season.
We can start with what's happening now.
Together, we can work towards greater understanding, practical strategies and ways of living that are more sustainable for you.

ANXIETY, TRAUMA & BURNOUT
Understanding what's happening beneath the overwhelm — and finding practical ways forward. Sometimes you've been carrying too much for too long. You might feel anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed, constantly on edge or simply unlike yourself. Things you once managed may feel harder. Your capacity may have changed. Or you may know that past experiences still affect how you think, feel, relate, and respond today. Counselling can provide space to understand what's happening beneath the surface — not simply manage the symptoms. At Refined, we'll work together to understand your experiences, recognise patterns and develop practical strategies that support regulation, recovery and meaningful change.
